This morning I accidentally threw Grandfather for a loop. I'd forgotten to tell him that Grandpa Maile doesn't watch the three little girlies on Tuesdays and Thursdays because he goes to the temple those mornings. Thus, we don't have to get started with our morning routine at 6:00, but 6:30 instead. He didn't confess until late this evening, that he was up and moving about, not quite sure if he should wake everyone up in case we'd overslept. It's quite the cute picture I have of him in my head, kind of pacing around, trying to figure out what to do, exactly. How I love him and the amazing service he is giving me. I'm not used to this, I must admit. I alternate between feeling guilty as I see him working around the house, like he should sit down and rest a bit, and feeling like I'm possibly taking advantage of him as I place my lunch order. Tonight I forced my phone and camera on him because I couldn't figure something out with both of them, exactly the thing I used to do with Naki. After Grandfather goes back home, I'm just gonna have to figure that stuff out on my own. But, I know myself well enough to know that I'm more than capable, most of the time, at doing that stuff. I just don't want to or like to. *sigh* Oh well. I guess I better get used to it. I wanted to share with all of you who are reading this one of the Lord's tender mercies. Most of you know that about a week and a half before Naki died I went to Idaho to visit my family while Naki stayed with the kids. While I was there my parents took me out to dinner. At the end of our meal my Dad told me of a plan he'd conceived. My Dad is an avid golfer, or as my Mom calls him, a "rabid" golfer. And in my opinion, he is a good one, too. Anyone who can whack those teeny balls around and actually make them go in a hole the size of a doughnut is pretty darn good, in my book. Anyway, at dinner he told me that during the winter snowy months in Couer D'Alene he gets a bit stir crazy and had decided that he would be coming to Utah to stay with me and Naki and would serve as our "Man Friday". (I had to ask what the heck that meant when he told me...couldn't figure out if that meant he would change his name to Friday, or he'd only be here on Fridays, or what! But apparently it's doing the same things that he's doing right now.) I find it no coincidence whatsoever that Heavenly Father had already given my Dad the promptings that I would so desperately need him. Just one of the many ways I've discovered that I have not been forgotten and that I am indeed not alone.
So today was a big day for Eli. She really really REALLY didn't want to go back to Joy School, our version of preschool. But the good news is she did it, and as is typical of her, she was proud of herself for doing it and even was glad she had done it. I guess it starts young...feeling good about yourself because you know you've triumphed over something that's hard for you.
Since we started back to school this week I decided to ease back into dance by giving the girlies the option to go this week or not. Line was the only one who wanted to go back today, surprise surprise. We'll see who wants to go on Thursday. It was the perfect opportunity to spend some much needed one on one time with her. Because of the loud and impossible-to-ignore methods that the younger girls use to express their emotions, the older girls I fear sometimes sit back and wait for me to notice that they need me. Line is no exception. I know that she is craving love and affection from me right now...Whew! It's rewarding to feel so loved and needed, but I just hope there's enough of me to around. While we were out at dance, I experienced my first bout of "retail therapy". Actually, that's not accurate. My first official prescribed retail therapy came with Ginny and my dear friend Laura...those girlies are shopping soul mates. They were speaking a language that I can't even begin to comprehend when they took me shopping for the clothes that I wore Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday for all the services. And there is definitely something to be said for feeling like a million bucks. I sure did. They knew I needed that even when I didn't.
I'll admit to feeling a bit of nervousness at the thought that my former stylist is no longer here to make sure I don't walk out of the house looking a bit odd. So, I was at TJ Maxx tonight and was looking at the shoes when the thought hit me that I'll never know which sneakers are dorky and which ones are high fashion. Not everyone can tell the difference, I know, but Naki always made sure that I didn't have any sneaker faux paus. I guess now I can walk around in sneaker oblivion. Fits pretty well with all the other things I seem to be walking around in a state of obliviousness about. I know that many who have experienced grieving have told me this, but tonight was one of the first times I'd experienced it. They told me that you find yourself falling apart at the strangest moments...this was definitely one of those moments for me. I was just fine when I was at the Pumpkin Patch last night. But tonight, standing in front of the shoes at TJ Maxx, I actually felt my palms start to sweat, I felt my heart start racing and go from 0 to 60 in 2 seconds, and tears just sprang to my eyes. I never expected that. Such a shock. Over sneakers, no less! The moment quickly passed, thank heavens. And now I know what to expect every time I go shopping. Not only the sneakers, but it was a bit of a child like emotion I felt when standing at the counter...like I was going to get in trouble for buying something without permission. Naki and I have always had very tight finances, and so always needed to run things by each other in order to keep our budget in the black and not the red. I honestly felt like I maybe should call my Mom just to see if these were approved purchases I was making. I realized how silly that was, and continued in my shopping...but then when I got home I seriously thought about maybe sneaking them in past my Dad! What am I, 17? So weird, this being alone thing. I'm pretty sure I'll get the hang of it...it's just strange.
A big thanks to my Dad for letting me model my new winter coat to him and for letting me show off my Franco Sarto steal...(did you catch my only Fashion lingo, Ginny and Laura?) He complimented me and was so sweet about it. I guess I could ask the girls what they think about my clothes in the future, but I'm not so sure I want to rely on the advice of those cuties. Malia led me astray once with a gold sequin debacle, and I'm not sure I'm ready for another one. (Just kidding, Malia!)
I'm super excited for tomorrow because we have our first Grief Therapy appointment at 3:30. I wanted to make sure that the girls didn't have any negative ideas about being a person that goes to therapy and so have been building it up for them ever since their Daddy died. I can't wait for some professional advice about the best way to build up these beauties and filling up their wells of confidence and self love. I realized as I was tucking Lose and Eli into bed tonight that I had never fully explained it to Eli, and so immediately started delivering my 'therapy is super fun' spiel. She got super excited and jumped onto her knees, placed both hands on her knees, leaned forward, and exclaimed, "Is it at Disneyland?!". Umm, apparently I need to take the fun level of therapy down a notch...she may be a bit let down when she doesn't get to ride any rollercoasters.

ReplyDeleteFirst of all, there's a reason why Eli is my favorite... (can I have a favorite?) LOVE that kid!!! Such a strong little thing to be brave enough to go to Joy School even though she didn't want to go and be proud of herself for going through with it! And I love the Disneyland comment. You're such a good mommy!
ReplyDeleteAs for the shopping thing... had I known you would be doing that tonight, I so would have gone with you! But I'm super proud of you for going through with it.
Abby- I worked with your husband for a short time at JetBlue and I just wanted to let you know my prayer are with you and your sweet girls. Naki was a great man with a great love for life. He always brought a smile to my face. And since I met him, I have not thought about Halloween and I think about him and the big hair wig he wore. It always makes me smile. Thank you for sharing your thought over the past few days and I hope and pray the Lord continues to bless you.
ReplyDeleteThanks for the post Abby. I'm so proud of the girls! I can relate about the fashion thing! You'd laugh at some of the things Jakcie catches me trying to leave the house in (including this morning). She's always so tactful about how she says it but the message that comes through is, "Russell, you can't seriously think that's presentable" :). Before too long, your daughters will be giving more than enough advice on keeping your style current (sorry I don't know the correct word for "current" in the fashion world Ginny!). I can't wait to hear how it goes tonight!
ReplyDeleteOkay first of all, I caught the Franco Sarto thing! Ha! And secondly, Ab just go with it, you have always wanted to be a little more fashion daring and I KNOW inside you have the know-how. So now is the time to let it out, if you think 'should I' or 'shouldn't I'...you SHOULD! Including the "peeps" of color! I am ready and willing to receive any picture messages to confirm said purchases or outfits, just so you know, and I will also give you permission if necessary :p. I do it ALL the time lol. I am also so excited for you and your girls to talk to someone and have help working through the barrage of feelings flying around right now. It's not only one day at a time, it's one MINUTE at a time. I am in a constant state of prayerfulness for all of you and all of us as a family. LOVE YOU!
ReplyDeleteHey Abby! You are such an example we love your family!

I'm really enjoying your blogs. Thank you for having the courage to write and share what is going on. It is a great way of therapy. By the way, if you ever need a potty break on a drive to Idaho, you are so welcome to stop by my place in Garland.
ReplyDeleteI love the Disneyland comment!! That's my kind of therapy.
ReplyDeleteI just read your comment on Ariane's blog. You are great! I just might have to steal the time out in the garage idea!
Love ya!
abs you are just so sweet. i crave reading your words.
ReplyDeleteI am sure your dad LOVED having you model for him. He might not have said it, but I am sure he was grateful. :) We love you Abby. You are in my thoughts and prayers.
ReplyDeleteAbby,
ReplyDeleteWhat a long time it has been since we have seen you, Naki, and your family. I have been blog stalking you for quite some time (very sneaky, aren't I?) It has been so much fun to see your family and hear about the fun things in your life. Last time we saw you you only had two kids! Wow, how time has passed.
I just wanted you to know that I always greatly admired you and Naki. The two of you are the kind of people that I have always wanted to be. I admired your kindness and expression of love that you showed to all those around you. I have often thought about the days at Pier 49 when we would sit back and watch our husbands down an entire large pizza (or two) by themselves and how much I admired your cute family and your beautiful little girls.
I want you to know that I truly admire the strength that you have shown through this trial. You are an amazing woman. I have thought that from the first time that I met you. I know it has already been said, but your girls truly are lucky to have you as their mother and to have Naki as their dad.
We are praying for you and your family and you are constantly in my thoughts and heart. I hope I can continue in my life with the same strength and kindness that you have always had.
All the best to you and your girlies.
Nikki Xanthos

Once again, I am amazed at how you are handling life. I would be a basketcase, but you show so much strength and wisdom. Thank you for being such a wonderful example and for being willing to share your thoughts and feelings with others. Especially those you don't know. I love reading your blog and you make me want to be a better wife and mother. I wish I knew you in person so that I could thank you. My heart and prayers are with your family constantly.
ReplyDeleteAbby- Thank you so much for sharing all of this with us! I really love reading your posts. When we were in the ward, I remember always being amazed/impressed at how bright, beautiful, and sweet your little ones were.
ReplyDeleteWe all pray that this doesn't happen to us, but if it ever does happen, I truly hope I can have your faith and strength.
Love,
Susan Warden
Hey Abby...good luck today! I'm sure it will be a great experience.
ReplyDeleteHello Abby!!
ReplyDeleteI just wanted to say you and your girlies are in my thoughts and prayers daily. I feel like a part of your family since I know Liz so well and know so much about all of you. I was extremely heart broken when I heard about the loss but I have taken my time in writing a comment on here because honestly I didn't think I would know what to say if anything. All I can say is that I truly admire and look up to you in more ways than you will ever understand. You are such a strong woman and so great when it comes to all of your babies. I think it takes more strength and courage for you to get out of bed every day for the sake of those girls but it is truly amazing! I love reading your blog and I agree with whoever said you should be a writer, I think you should too :) Anyway, thanks for allowing me to be a part of your journey and your in my prayers every day! Stay strong
Love Always,
Kaylee
LOL, Disneyland :) I love it!
ReplyDeleteThanks for posting, i look forward to checking your blog before i have to get and get the kids from school. I love you tons. You looked amazing at the services - how awesome that you have your sis who could see what you needed, gotta love sisters xoxo what an amazing man your dad is, he warms my heart.
Okay, so I just love that little Miss Eli McSmelly. She just makes my heart melt every time I see her with her big eyes and heart full of sweetness. I'm so glad she came to Joy School this week. She's so brave! I also hope she wasn't too disappointed that therapy wasn't at Disneyland! Sooooo cute!
ReplyDeleteAs for style, you have always looked superb in my eyes and I'm sure you'll continue to do so. I'll go with you anytime but not might be too helpful since I am clueless myself.
I'm so glad your dad is there to help you. It sounds like he is so good to you. Take advantage of it and don't feel guilty because you deserve it. Remember that we're here to fill in with whatever and whenever you need it. Love you!!
The Disneyland comment is great. Thanks for giving me a laugh today!
ReplyDeleteI would LOVE to go to Disneyland...but, nah; it's just a joke! And, dad, do the good work! Love, Tim/Uncle Tim
ReplyDeleteDisneyland!! That is just too much!! But, I suppose, when you are a Princess surrounded by Princesses and guarded by a King and Queen and the Great Grand Duke-grandfather...it only makes sense!!! Love, The Great Grand Duchess-grandmother
ReplyDeleteI love that I get to sit here on my computer and read your journal. I love how you write, and how you think. Thanks for sharing your thoughts. You are the coolest! Oh, and I am gonna come visit.
